Art rooted in nature

celebrating the beauty that lies beneath the surface

When a tree falls, a story begins

It can be heartbreaking when a loved tree succumbs to disease, a storm, or pests. However, the wood can be transformed and the history and memories preserved in the wood given a second life.

I salvage all the wood I work with from trees that have died or been removed from the urban landscape. Generally, this wood gets hauled to the landfill or ground into mulch. However, I strive to find value and beauty in what is overlooked and treated as trash.

In my work, I enjoy exploring the properties of different wood species, and celebrate their unique characteristics. Salvaging urban wood allows me to experiment with dozens of species and every piece is one of a kind.

The process

Because I source all of my wood from salvaged trees in the local landscape, I’m involved in every step of the process from raw material to finished art work. This gives me an incredible amount of freedom in my creative process.

I’m primarily a turner, using a lathe to carve and shape my pieces. I also combine woodturning with a variety of other techniques, including carving and pyrography, which allows for even more creativity and expression.

Do you have questions about my process or have a tree you’d like to preserve a piece of as cherished art?

The Artist

Hi, I’m Daniel. I’m the artist behind Arboreus Art. This journey started in college when I happened to get a job at a woodturning store. I quickly learned that  wood is expensive, and I was poor, so I started doing tree work as a way to get free woodturning material.

Ten years later, those decisions have led me to Nashville, TN where I am a Board Certified Master Arborist by day and wood artist by night. My experience in arboriculture has given me insight into how trees grow and has opened artistic avenues by exploring wood in completely new ways. Wood working, in turn, has shaped how I approach tree care by teaching me to see the value in the overlooked and disregarded.

I’m grateful you’re here! Your support means a lot to me. Please reach out if you have any questions. Thank you
